Deeg was assigned to the 544th Bomb Squadron in December 1944 as a Radio Operator, without crew. He flew eight combat missions with various crews before the air war ended in April 1945.
Report from the panel hosts: "Another super day on our final (LOL) wing panel mission which took us to to visit John Deeg, 97 years young, in Sag Harbor, NY. Mr Deeg, radio operator and waist gunner, flew 8 missions on a B-17 at the end of WWll. It was an honor to collect his signature on the panel which will end up in the museum at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.
"After the signing ceremony, we shared a champagne toast with his family."
