One of the B-17s lost that day was 'Damn Yankee II' piloted by Lt. Bruce Sundlun. KIA crew members were Sergeants George Hayes, Mike Cappelletti and Frank Lekas. Navigator Reino Jylkka,Engineer William Ramsey and Radio Operator Charles Snyder all bailed out and became POWs. Lt. Sundlun also bailed out and evaded capture, eventually making his way back to England. Co-pilot Andrew Boyles replaced the original co-pilot, Lt. Charles 'Ted' Zitnik, and was also captured. Ball turret gunner Harry Cologne and waist gunner Chester Snyder who were not original crew members were also KIA that day. The original Co-Pilot, Lt. Zitnik, became a pilot and went down over Bremen 5 days earlier. The original 'Damn Yankee II' crew had been assigned to the 384th in August, 1943. The only original crew members who completed their tour were Lt. Vincent McGovern and Sgt. William Curtis. Monday, December 1st 2008 - 06:25:10 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Rick Giancarlo E-mail address: rgiancarlo1@comcast.net Comments: Remembering the 65th Anniversary of the Mission to Bremen on Nov. 26, 1943. One of the B-17's shot down that day was 'Chaplain's Office' piloted by Lt. Charles 'Ted' Zitnik. As the crew bailed out over Germany, Sgt. Robert H. Rimmer's parachute deployed in the open bomb bay as he jumped. The chute became tangled and Sgt. Rimmer was suspended under the plane. Lt. Zitnik stayed with the plane and asked the one remaining crew member to try and pull him back up but it was impossible. 3 German fighters from a nearby base then forced 'Chaplain's Office' down near an airfield, and Lt. Zitnik stayed with the plane and crashed landed by himself. Sgt. Rimmer was killed when his body struck a hangar as the plane went down and Lt. Zitnik was taken prisoner at the airfield. In his flight diary he refers to 'Big B', I assume this is the name of his bomber. He also identifies many of the crew members he flew with: AC Fletcher, CP Burroughs, AC Mohr, CP Oliver, P Martin, CP Stoecker, CP Boglio among others. I have his flight diary as well as a number of pictures of the crews. My hope is that someone has additional information that I can share with my family to keep these memories alive. Gilmore who later retired from the Reserves as a colonel. He died back in 1980, but his memory lives on through myself and my family. In August of this year (2008), my daughter and I flew to the UK and visited the site at Grafton Underwood and the church in the town with the 8th Air Force window. She is an Air Force ROTC cadet who is a senior at Notre Dame. It was quite a moving visit. I spent 26 years in the Air Force and flew with the 8th Air Force in B-52's. I've always been amazed at the hardships and sacrifices the men of the 384th endured to preserve our way of life. Thank you for a job well done, and I am sorry that my Dad is no longer with us. Wismer was my grandfather; I just started to research information pertaining to his WWII service. I have pictures and records. Here's what I know so far: Richard G. Wismer participated in 35 missions with the 8th Air Force in England as a B-17 pilot. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with five oak-leaf clusters in addition to the Europen-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon. Undoubtedly a tribute to his crew. The campaigns he flew included Northern France, Germany, and Ardennes. The plane was known as 'The Wiz Kids', some people called him by either two nicknames; Bud or Dick. My grandfather passed in 1966 and was one of the founters of an Air Force Reserve Units in the Lehigh Valley (Flight B of the 9554th Air Force Reserve Squadron) of Pennsylvania. By the time he passed he was a Lieutenant Colonel. Additionally his Army Serial Number was 0819377; close to the one posted below. Was forced to bail out with three other crew members when they were hit by anti-aircraft fire over Germany resulting in a fire in their section of the aircraft. The rest of the crew managed to fly back to Grafton-Underwood. All four were captured and Mr. Furiga broke his leg on impact with the ground. This happened on their 10th mission. My father, Wilber David Hepler, Jr., was part of the 384th during WWII. I have been unable to find anything on his B-17 he called 'The Pregnant Princess'. Would any of you know anything about this? A very kindly gentleman in the village post office gave me some information about where to walk locally in order to see the remaining vestiges of the airfield. I believe that gentleman had been a UK-based 384th contact for historical matters at one time. At the moment, I cannot recall his name, but I would like to thank him for the time he gave me that day. He and my father, 2LT Richard Grand Pre were members of Crew 17, 545th BS, Fort #42-30076. Their plane was one of two that was lost on the 384th’s first operational mission to Antwerp Belgium on 22 June 1943. LT Turner sacrificed his own life while saving my father’s by heroically helping my father escape the doomed plane. He was unable to escape the plane before it crashed. Lt Turner’s mother, Mrs. Richard Turner, was living on Kern Avenue in Los Angeles at the time of her son’s death. Please help me locate the family of this amazing man. Thank you! My father Patrick Benker was in the 546th BS and shot down Easter Sunday 1944.Dad became a POW and had a serious leg injury.It was with the help of others that he lived.I may never find the men but have found a few,and it has been a very special honor. He's doing great and still shooting skeet three times a week at 86 (had to give up golf in his 70's due to a bad knee)and still out-shoots most guys half his age.
