E-mail address: bmschick@earthlink.com Comments: I regret to inform you that my father, Frank J. Schick II, has passed away this Christmas Eve 12-24-2007 of complications from congestive heart failure. He served in the 384th as a radio operator. Brian Schick Tuesday, December 25th 2007 - 03:49:58 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Ken Decker E-mail address: 384thhistory@citlink.net Comments: Hello everyone! I want to wish all of you a HAPPY HOLIDAY and thanks to all who sent cards and or letters for the season. As yo know I have been out of touch for many months, due to the serious illness of my wife. I have been receiving copies of the e-mails you have all sent in to Fred Preller and the exchanges which followed. I am and always will be interested in the continuing history of the 384th. In the interest of all who have contributed information, photos and documents to me over nearly 15 years, I am in the process of turning over the collection to Fred Preller, Tony Plowright and Mark Meehl. This will take some time as there are thousands of pages. These fellows have my permission to use all material, including my book of the written and ongoing history to those who are seeking information on the group. I have asked that this be limited to former members, their crew-mates and to families of former members, and limited also to specific instances. This places this information into the hands of some very capable people who also have assisted me over the years and thus are proven worthy of carrying on the task. Thanks to all who have contributed over the years and to those who continue to remain good friends. It has been a mind rewarding experience which I will continue to treasure. I will also aid Fred, Tony and Mark in any way I can with the research process. My phone remains unlisted for the privacy required for the rest and recuperation of my wife. Thanks again to all! Was forced to bail out with three other crew members when they were hit by anti-aircraft fire over Germany resulting in a fire in their section of the aircraft. The rest of the crew managed to fly back to Grafton-Underwood. All four were captured and Mr. Furiga broke his leg on impact with the ground. This happened on their 10th mission. The last time I talked with him he was living in Broadview Heights, Ohio. Do any of you remember him, and if so, do you remember the plane he flew on. We had lamost 2 years together as he constantly said he was not doing his part, He finally requested combat duty and was assigned to the Gremlin with John Buslee, Dick Albrecht and other crew members. He was gone from me less than six weeks when he was killed. I have contacted a lot of old friends..but would love knowing more about Dick Albrecht's wife, Patty, and the baby girl they had with them in Ardmore Ok. They were from Chico, Ca. I currently have over 200 veterans from all branches and ranks, in my “private library”. I have always been interested in World War II and what better way to learn this is to talk to the men and women who lived it. It is my way of keeping their memories and stories alive. For every World War II Veteran we loose, a piece of history is gone forever. I believe that it should be told to someone who is willing to take the time to document their story. For the men and women, who served during World War II, they all have a great story to tell, whether they were in combat or sitting behind a desk. They answered the call to duty in a time when more the half the world was at war. When it is my time to pass on, all this information will be placed in the General Patton Museum in Chiriaco Summit, CA so that future generations will know what these men and women went through. One day, all of our Veterans from World War II, will have passed on and so will their stories. Peter Minix Former Marine Sgt. In particular, did the 545th BS have a nickname? Additionally, am trying to determine the call sign for B-17F Damn Yankee (41-24557, JD-O) lost on 01 December 1943. I understand the squadron call sign was 'Splashboard.' Were individual a/c given specific (i.e. 'permanent') call signs or did they change from mission to mission depending on position within the squadron? Have looked through this site and have some of Ken Decker's material, but could not find the information requested above. Any assistance or direction provided is greatly appreciated. My father, Wilber David Hepler, Jr., was part of the 384th during WWII. I have been unable to find anything on his B-17 he called 'The Pregnant Princess'. Would any of you know anything about this? Some of his crew members were: Joe Powell---Co-Pilot, Robert Mason---Navigator, and Ira Reed---Bombadeer. He flew out of Grafton Underwood. Unfortunately he had 3 daughters and never talked shop with any of us until we married, then only to our husbands. He retired in 1965 as a Major and passed away quietly in 2005 at the age of 85. We are very proud of our 'Dad' for having served his country for so many years and would like to have any other information that anyone would like to share. May I also add, that if you have never been to the Memorial site in Grafton Underwood you are missing out on a wonderful thing. The marble memorial and the stained glass window in the church are a beautiful sight, as is the town. The people that are still around are so thankful that we were there that they felt compelled to memorialize it for their children and children's children to see. They will never be forgotten. Thank you. Zink, a pilot with the 384th from about October 1944 to May 1945. I have always been proud of my uncle's service although I never knew too many details until recently. I certainly feel a kinship with The Mighty Eighth as most of my career witht he USAF was with 8AF units. I visited Grafton Underwood several years ago. A very kindly gentleman in the village post office gave me some information about where to walk locally in order to see the remaining vestiges of the airfield. I believe that gentleman had been a UK-based 384th contact for historical matters at one time. At the moment, I cannot recall his name, but I would like to thank him for the time he gave me that day. I hope to correspond again and perhaps attend the Dayton 2008 event if nephews are permitted to attend. Cheers to you all; I have deep admiration for you..... Jean K. Macken served as Engineer/Gunner aboard a B-17G from March, 1945 to January, 1946 logging 305 hours flight time with the 545th and 546th Squadrons. Your site lists him as a corporal but he was promoted to Staff Sergeant in May, 1945. His pilot's name was Sheehan, and I see there is a George Sheehan listed on your personnel roster. I don't know if it's the same Sheehan. His training records show he trained at Kingman, Avon Park, and Hunter Field (the same field I flew out of for Army Paratrooper training 25 years later). I have a question and hopefully someone out there has an answer. I have two cartoons that it appears my dad drew titled 'Sgt Flakbait'.
