The 'good news' is that Jim Loter is not currently in our usual histories and databases - meaning that we have found another one!
Thanks for the post, and please reply, as your email address is not working for me.

Dad is anxious to renew old friendships and to hear from anyone else that served with him. I look forward to hearing from anyone with a story to tell.

Comments: My Uncle Jean Deveau Vogt is mistakenly entered as a member of the 544 he was in the 545 he was a co-pilot 2nd Lt. 42/97188 was the number of the plane. They were shot down on Mission 135 on June 14, 1944. 3Kia, 3Pow, and 3 escaped and made it back to friendly lines. They were attacking an airfield at Couldommiers somewhere around Normandy or futher inland. This was not their plane from what I understand it was a mixed crew of 9 that went up in a plane that was thought to be unlucky. Quite obviously it was. Jean was killed along with the pilot, I had sent a picture of the original crew in but I have not seen it. Does anyone out there know anything about this mission??

Comments: HGTV ran program 'If Walls Could Talk' (about historic finds in houses) on 16 Apr 2006 at 10 PM CDT in Chicago. One or more scrapbooks were found in a house (owner John O'Donnell??) & shown. They were from an Army Air Corps officer flying B17s from UK. The few pictures they had on screen were excellent, and since the officer's name was known, copies of the photos with any identification from the scrapbook(s) could be an excellent addition to his unit's website or library. I spent hours trying to track down and communicate historical value for the unit association to the current owners without luck. Someone else should try to locate b4 these disappear.

I have two Photo Books of photos of the unit and of many aircraft. I would like to know of the number of missions if any has any records. We can't have the Bronze Star he was awarded in 1944 place on his grave marker because the government has lost his records and the only proof is the newspaper clipping and his ribbon. But that is not enough. I know how it is after 30 yrs 7 mo 4 days with USAF. Dad and I had some wonderful talks. His last few days he was still flying missions. God Bless him he was quite a man.

Comments: HELLO TO ALL VETERANS OR FAMILY OF: This is my 8th year of compiling and collecting data on our World War 2 veterans, it has really been a learning experience for me to communicate with men like yourself or the family of veterans. I currently have over 170+ World War II veterans, from all branches, in my private library. None of this information is given out or published for a monetary gain. I have always been interested in World War II for many years and it is just my way of keeping the memories and stories alive. If you wish to share this information with me, please e-mail at pdmmm@msn.com I would greatly appreciate adding you to my library. I look forward to hearing from you.

Comments: I was a Navigator about B17 Tremblin' Gremlin shot down over Belgium on Sept 19, 1944. Joe R. Carnes was the pilot, William G. Wyatt was the Copilot, Raymond A. Panici was the waist gunner, Charles W. Ford was Engineer/Top Turret Gunner, Frank Schick was Radioman, Anderson was tail gunner, James B. King was ball gunner, As there was no U.S. Hospital facility at these front lines, 4 of the crew were taken to Hospital St Joseph in Gilly Belgium. James King was the most seriously Injured. After about 4 Days Lt. Benjamin and Sgt Panici who were both injured but ambulatory, traveled to Charleroi to find any US army office to get us transported back to an American facility. Two days later all 4 were removed to a field hospital and then evacuated by train to the General Hospital in Paris. It took me 31 days to be reassigned to the 544th with travel by Plane and Train from the Hospital in Paris to a Hospital in England and thence to Grafton-Underwood. As this was my 13th Mission I returned and completed a tour of 31. It was an experience that I would not like to repeat but I would not give up the memory of these days.

Comments: Hello everyone! I want to wish all of you a HAPPY HOLIDAY and thanks to all who sent cards and or letters for the season. As yo know I have been out of touch for many months, due to the serious illness of my wife. I have been receiving copies of the e-mails you have all sent in to Fred Preller and the exchanges which followed. I am and always will be interested in the continuing history of the 384th. In the interest of all who have contributed information, photos and documents to me over nearly 15 years, I am in the process of turning over the collection to Fred Preller, Tony Plowright and Mark Meehl. This will take some time as there are thousands of pages. These fellows have my permission to use all material, including my book of the written and ongoing history to those who are seeking information on the group. I have asked that this be limited to former members, their crew-mates and to families of former members, and limited also to specific instances. This places this information into the hands of some very capable people who also have assisted me over the years and thus are proven worthy of carrying on the task. Thanks to all who have contributed over the years and to those who continue to remain good friends. It has been a mind rewarding experience which I will continue to treasure. I will also aid Fred, Tony and Mark in any way I can with the research process. My phone remains unlisted for the privacy required for the rest and recuperation of my wife. Thanks again to all! Comments: Have listed on our web-site, 2nd Lieutenant,Frank Furiga was bombbardier with 547th Bomb Squadron, 384th Bomb Group. Was forced to bail out with three other crew members when they were hit by anti-aircraft fire over Germany resulting in a fire in their section of the aircraft. The rest of the crew managed to fly back to Grafton-Underwood. All four were captured and Mr. Furiga broke his leg on impact with the ground. This happened on their 10th mission. The last time I talked with him he was living in Broadview Heights, Ohio. Do any of you remember him, and if so, do you remember the plane he flew on. Any info you can give me on this vet will be appreciated. Thank You, Harry Harvison csharvison@comcast.net

Comments: Hello: Looking for the name of Captain Browns plane that was shot down May 8, 1944. My uncle Don Reis was the right waist gunner on that plane but no name is listed. He was killed in action that day and he was the only body that was found. Also, are there any patches available from the 384th bomb group and the 547th bomber squadron? Please advise on where I can find them. Thanks for any info. God bless.

Marvin Fryden was on his second mission as bombardier aboard the Tremblin Gremlin when he was fatally wounded, remaining conscious only to drop his bombs over Langenhagen..(544th) He had been commissioned and assigned as an instructor in the states. We had lamost 2 years together as he constantly said he was not doing his part, He finally requested combat duty and was assigned to the Gremlin with John Buslee, Dick Albrecht and other crew members. He was gone from me less than six weeks when he was killed. I have contacted a lot of old friends..but would love knowing more about Dick Albrecht's wife, Patty, and the baby girl they had with them in Ardmore Ok. They were from Chico, Ca. Comments: I have been collecting and documenting the history of our World War II Veterans since 1998. I currently have over 200 veterans from all branches and ranks, in my “private library”. I have always been interested in World War II and what better way to learn this is to talk to the men and women who lived it. It is my way of keeping their memories and stories alive. For every World War II Veteran we loose, a piece of history is gone forever. I believe that it should be told to someone who is willing to take the time to document their story. For the men and women, who served during World War II, they all have a great story to tell, whether they were in combat or sitting behind a desk. They answered the call to duty in a time when more the half the world was at war. When it is my time to pass on, all this information will be placed in the General Patton Museum in Chiriaco Summit, CA so that future generations will know what these men and women went through. One day, all of our Veterans from World War II, will have passed on and so will their stories. Peter Minix Former Marine Sgt. Indio, CA

Comments: Hi, Looking for some information regarding 545th BS and one of it's aircraft. In particular, did the 545th BS have a nickname? Additionally, am trying to determine the call sign for B-17F Damn Yankee (41-24557, JD-O) lost on 01 December 1943. I understand the squadron call sign was 'Splashboard." Were individual a/c given specific (i.e. 'permanent') call signs or did they change from mission to mission depending on position within the squadron? Have looked through this site and have some of Ken Decker's material, but could not find the information requested above. Any assistance or direction provided is greatly appreciated. Comments: What a great site! My father, Wilber David Hepler, Jr., was part of the 384th during WWII. I have been unable to find anything on his B-17 he called "The Pregnant Princess". Would any of you know anything about this? Some of his crew members were: Joe Powell---Co-Pilot, Robert Mason---Navigator, and Ira Reed---Bombadeer. He flew out of Grafton Underwood. Unfortunately he had 3 daughters and never talked shop with any of us until we married, then only to our husbands. He retired in 1965 as a Major and passed away quietly in 2005 at the age of 85. We are very proud of our "Dad" for having served his country for so many years and would like to have any other information that anyone would like to share. May I also add, that if you have never been to the Memorial site in Grafton Underwood you are missing out on a wonderful thing. The marble memorial and the stained glass window in the church are a beautiful sight, as is the town. The people that are still around are so thankful that we were there that they felt compelled to memorialize it for their children and children's children to see. They will never be forgotten. Thank you.

I have always been proud of my uncle's service although I never knew too many details until recently. I certainly feel a kinship with The Mighty Eighth as most of my career witht he USAF was with 8AF units. I visited Grafton Underwood several years ago. A very kindly gentleman in the village post office gave me some information about where to walk locally in order to see the remaining vestiges of the airfield. I believe that gentleman had been a UK-based 384th contact for historical matters at one time. At the moment, I cannot recall his name, but I would like to thank him for the time he gave me that day. I hope to correspond again and perhaps attend the Dayton 2008 event if nephews are permitted to attend. Cheers to you all; I have deep admiration for you.....

Comments: I found my dad's name on your personnel roster and would like to add some information. Jean K. Macken served as Engineer/Gunner aboard a B-17G from March, 1945 to January, 1946 logging 305 hours flight time with the 545th and 546th Squadrons. Your site lists him as a corporal but he was promoted to Staff Sergeant in May, 1945. His pilot's name was Sheehan, and I see there is a George Sheehan listed on your personnel roster. I don't know if it's the same Sheehan. His training records show he trained at Kingman, Avon Park, and Hunter Field (the same field I flew out of for Army Paratrooper training 25 years later). I have a question and hopefully someone out there has an answer. I have two cartoons that it appears my dad drew titled "Sgt Flakbait". Is anyone familiar with these cartoons and/or does anyone know if they were published in any 8th Air Force publications?
