He, and three others (T/Sgt Ernest Trickett, Top Turret Gunner; S/Sgt Harold Cooke, Tail Gunner; and S/Sgt George Waterman, waist gunner) were killed when their plane was attacked after completing the 384 Bomb Group's first operational mission to Antwerp Belgium on 22 June 1943. The other crew members were blown out of the plane; only T/Sgt Trickett's chute was open on the ground and he was unrecognizable, except for the name on his jacket. He apparently had been shot by enemy aircraft. The other two died on impact. 2/LT Turner, evidently assisted 2/LT Richard Grandpere, the navigator, with his egress from the plane and was unable to leave the plane. It's believed he was killed on impact. The remaining crew members did survive, were captured, and spent time in a POW camp. Palmgren E-mail address: ppalmgren47@msn.com Comments: My father, Warren L. Palmgren, was with the 384th BG, 546th sq. on the ground crew. I see there are many pictures of 'Snuffy', (BK*O, 42-97251) showing up on this site, a couple with my father pictured.I have some others that have my mother's name 'Mary Jane' on the #2 engine cowling and more photos during an engine change. I also have some photos of other 384th aircraft that I have not seen posted and plan to find time to submit. Any information on my father or any of 'Snuffy's' missions (106 total?) will be greatly appreciated. From what I know, he subbed for someone on the 'Sugar Puss' 42-3088 as a waist gunner on it's final mission over Hamburg, Germany on July 25, 1943 where it was shot down. He was captured and a prisoner of war for some time. Serial # 18 080 481 Stephenson, Charles. If anyone knows how I can find more info please email me. Thank you, Lee Stephenson Allen Tuesday, February 8th 2005 - 09:09:26 AM ------------------------------------- Name: William Merriman Price IV E-mail address: wmpiv@hotmail.com Comments: My father, Lt. Col. (then 2nd Lt.) William Merriman Price III, Flew for the 547th Bomd Squadron, 384th Group, from mid August 1943 until February 6, 1944. He finished his tour of 25 missions on that date. His log shows that he flew lead for the group that mission to Nancy. He also flew deputy group lead on 1/29/44 to Frankfurt, deputy group lead to Pommereval 1/21/44, deputy Group lead to Meillard 1/14/44. He flew group lead to Croiste on 12/31/44. He flew 547 Sqdn lead to Emden 12//11/43,, Bremen 12/13/43. Osnabruck 12/22/43and to Ludwigshafen 12/30/43. His total combat time was 154;50. You have noted that he ditched Old Battle Axe on the Nantes raid. He was awarded the DFC that trip. The story is quite interesting. Sgt Grant was abord that trip and also on the Oct Schwienfurt raid when he and his crew bailed out over Grafton Underwood; control cables were shot out in the tail and my father could not control Windy City well enough to land. Sgt Grant was also on another '17 that went down (not one of my father's.) On the Oct Schwienfurt raid everyone got down OK except his co pilot, Lt. Brown. Lt. Brown broke his leg on the parchute landing. Later Lt. Brown recovered, was assigned a crew as pilot, flew a mission (I was never told which one) and was never heard from again. My father finished up in a green G that he named Rum Pot. I have a photo of him, his crew and Rum Pot at the end of their tour. Rum Pot was taken over by Dale Smith after my father left. He apparently flew it on the first raid over Berlin. Rum Pot took flak damage in the main spar but got everyone home. About 20 years ago an article written by Dale Smith appeared in the Smithsonian's 'Air and Space' magazine recounting that mission. The article contains a photo of Rum Pot. Another 384th airplane was named Rum Pot II. I have photos of the airplane and some of the crew but do not know the pilot.s name (according to my photo he was a Captain.) Ruthless was another of my father's regular airplanes. He said that he didn't like it for some reason but couldn't complan because it was fast and light on gas. He was grounded with an ear infection when another crew took Ruthless out and lost her. My father also left a B-17 on an emerency RAF field. The airplane had been shot to hell and was later condemned as beyond economical repair. I beleve that happened on the Bremen mission of 12/13/43 but I am not certain. I know nothing about the airplane. My father drug his high frequency antenna through an RAF barracks on his approach. He was worried that he would get into trouble since relling in the high Frequency antenna was a checklist item. Apparently he had all he could do to keep the wreck in the air and spent no time on checklists. I believe he said that two engines were shot out. He was really 'pissed' (his word) that the airplane was condemned because he worked very hard to get it back to England. I am sorry that this is in no more r. It is what I can do right now. There is a lot more to tell about Old Battle Axe's last trip if anyone is interested. William Merriman Price IV. Many thanks for the site, keep up the good work. And there is a memorial in Opende,Groningen where five of the crew members are listed.I have a bit of a problem with this, as I was sure there were 2 survivors, and that means 11 people?in this crew?If you want to see the sitego to search, click 2 Lt.Jaques.E.
