2LT John B. Whiteside Crew, 547th BS


Replacement crew assigned to the 547th BS in December 1944. This crew made a crash-landing aboard B-17G 42-97263 "Lady Margaret" at Grafton-Underwood on January 10, 1945. With a full bomb and fuel load, the #1 engine caught fire on the take-off roll and then #2 lost power. The plane came down in a cabbage field. Miraculously, all 9 crewmen survived. The crew went on to finish their combat tour, and flew through April 1945.
